Internal Structure Elucidation of the Cluster

In a business environment endemic to Hokkaido that lacks major companies with centripetal force, Hokkaido bio-industry cluster is growing and developing uniquely, centering on university-launched ventures and small-to-medium-sized businesses.

The internal structure of the cluster is characterized by the fact that the relationship within the cluster was expanded owing to the research-support companies, which appeared in the 1980s and acted as business-related nodes. Since 2002, the network has increasingly expanded as companies have increased in number and concentrated. Such a trend is attributed to the rapid increase of university-launched ventures and new entries from different sectors due to the establishment of a support system by related administrative bodies as a unit and various networks. Mutual relationships among companies, such as transactions and joint research, are further deepening and developing within the cluster.
